The course is designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of relational database systems and Structured Query Language (SQL). With a primary focus on open-source technologies and a complementary view of enterprise-grade systems, the course is suitable for individuals across disciplines who are interested in data analytics, software development, and AI-driven applications.

Learning goal

  • Introduction to the structure and principles of relational databases and ASCII SQL
  • Provide primary hands-on experience to ASCII SQL with the help of PostgreSQL
  • Demonstrate advance concepts such as indexing, query optimization, and data modeling
  • Provide practical comparative knowledge of open-source and enterprise database systems through an optional demonstration using Microsoft SQL Server hosted on Azure Free Tier
  • When time permits: Introduce vector data handling in PostgreSQL using the pgvector extension, with relevance to modern AI and ML systems
