Quantum computing has advanced in leaps and bounds in the last decade, with many real quantum computers already commercially available for computations, and true quantum advantage expected within the next decade. This is a transformative technology, a new paradigm of computing that will enable new algorithms and possibilities across every scientific field. The fields of life sciences and bioinformatics are no exception, with many quantum algorithms already available or being developed in these domains. This makes it necessary for life science researchers to also learn about quantum computing. In this tutorial, we will present an introduction to quantum computing tailored to life science and bioinformatics. We will explain the background of quantum computing in such a way that no prior knowledge of quantum theory is required, help you understand how to interpret a quantum circuit step by step, offer a brief overview of the current state of quantum computing hardware, present the classes of quantum algorithms that might become relevant for you in the future, and work hands on using Python-based quantum circuit simulators on at least one quantum algorithm that could see use in the areas of life science and bioinformatics.
